the newt town shooting gave mr. obama the political footing he needed to take on gun rights in america. here is with bill o'reilly on the factor last night. >> i think this is what he wanted to do with his entire political career. he uses opportunity to do it and use every rhetorical device to do it. >> does he think banning assault weapons will stop mass murder? >> i think he believes that. the president doesn't have guts to say it doesn't believe in the second amendment. the second amendment is in the constitution. i didn't write the constitution. neither did you. neither did he. if he doesn't want the second amendment to be in the constitution have the guts to admit that. bill: there is lot of reaction. monica crowley, radio talk show host, doug cone, former advisor to president bill clinton. morning to both of you. what do you think about what senator rubio said about the president and second amendment. >> there is lot of wariness and caution on the republican side. they are worried this may be the beginning of a fall on assault on the second amendment. i think senator rubio is cor

't have them, but they've criticized mr. obama's call for doctors to ask unstable patients if they have guns in their homes. and congress has sometimes expressly forbid the government from studying gun violence. the president says he's going to change that. >> i will direct the centers for disease control to go ahead and study the best ways to reduce it. and congress should fund research into the effects that violent video games have on young minds. we don't benefit from ignorance. we don't benefit from not knowing the science of this end dem kick of violence. >> reporter: the strategy here is for the president to talk big picture about the terrible costs of gun violence, not just the horror of mass shootings but the toll of daily violence that has claimed 900 lives across the country since newtown. while on capitol hill the legislation will be broken down into pieces. california senator dianne feinstein, the author of the 1994 assault weapons ban, will call on her colleagues to pass it again. new york senator chuck schumer will push for universal background checks, that much more likel

, is not a believer in the second amendment although he states he is. >> reporter: mr. obama's proposals include reinstating the assault weapons ban which congress let lapse in 2004 and limiting the number of bullets in high capacity magazines to ten, but even getting those measures through the democratically controlled senate will be difficult. north dakota's heidi heidcamp opposes the gun restrictions. >> this is wrong headed. we need to be doing things that actually achieve a result and that's not something i am convinced will achieve the intended result. >> reporter: there are other proposals on the president's list that have bipartisan support like cracking down on gun trafficking and imposing universal background checks. >> if you want to buy a gun, whether it's from a licensed dealer or a private seller you should at least have to show you are not a felon or somebody legally prohibited from buying one. this is common sense. >> reporter: washington state republican dave reichert a former sheriff, agrees with the president on that point. >> i think that's part of a

-- that the conceptual problem begins with the definition of assault weapons. mr. obama certainly didn't define it. the ban that was imposed in 1994 -- guest: that's just not accurate. first of all, the features of an assault weapon are not cosmetic. they're functional. i mean, for example, under the bill that i think will be introduced in congress, if you have, for example, a semi-automatic rifle that can take a detachble magazine, and that can be a high-capacity 30, 50-round magazine, and has a pistol grip, that is an assault rifle. that's not cosmetic. the significance of the pistol grip is that it's used to fire from the hip. literally shooting from the hip. where you are not eyeing your target. that is meant to spray fire, to hit a lot of people very quickly. and while these are semi-automatic weapons, not automatic weapons, they can fire actually almost as quickly. you can empty a 30-round magazine in about five seconds using a semi-automatic assault rifle. and additionally, the federal bill that lapsed in 2004 did prevent crime and prevented the use of assault weapons in crime. there was a

consensus. republican house speaker john boehner told newly reelected president obama he wants to see obama succeed. >> mr. president, this is your moment. we are ready to be led -- not as democrats or republicans, but as americans. we want you to lead. not as a liberal or conservative, but as president of the united states of america. we want you to succeed. challenge ourselves to find the common ground that has eluded us. let's rise above the dysfunctions and to the right thing together for our country. >> there you have house speaker john boehner. >> i appreciate the sentiment, but the words at the moment, we will see what kind of truth, what kind of authenticity there is behind those words when the president, now back in washington, sits down with republicans to deal with that word i hate, sequestration. when you start dealing with these cuts on the table -- with said many times, budgets are moral documents. when they get into the weeds about these numbers and about the priorities, we will see how strong sentiment comes through. >> my spontaneous response is i believe those words, and t

, with a lot of equipment. and i'll be there. >> but it will be more presumably than just mrs. obama and the daughters and the president? >> i believe there will be some family members, but i don't have -- i'll see if i have -- if i can get information on which additional members will be there. >> and then at the dinner affair afterwards, who would be involved? >> i'm sorry, which affair? >> on sunday, after the private swearing-in. >> i'll have to check on that. i'm not sure. there's a series of events, but i'm not sure which one you're referring to. >> well, just what he will be -- >> what's he going to do after he's sworn in? >> -- participating in immediately after he's sworn in. >> i'll try to find out. >> there have been several news reports about an incident in syria. december 23rd, six people died from some sort of gas attack. several people on the ground seem to believe that it was a chemical agent. the state department did a couple of investigations. they couldn't corroborate that. on tuesday, the white house put out a statement saying only that it didn't match what you kno

the commission's 2013 agenda. mr. gallagher was asked of the securities and exchange commission commissioner, appointed by president obama and took office in 2011. this was hosted by the u.s. chamber of commerce but it is just under an hour. >> good afternoon. thank you for joining us. i'm david hirschmann, president and ceo of capital markets compared is here at the u.s. chamber of commerce. our work was one over six years ago before the financial crisis because at the time on a bipartisan basis a group of folks that we had commissioned together told us that the financial regulatory structure served his country well for 75 years was no longer working. that it was out of date, that they were too many gaps, too many layers, and that somebody should get around doing financial regulatory reform before the next crisis. and shortly thereafter, a crisis did, in fact, happen. and the need for financial regulatory reform became even clear to the american people. i wish i could tell you that dodd-frank had achieved everything certainly we hope we reform, and certainly it did some of the things that n
